Sieve Analysis
At Geotherm, we adhere to the ASTM D6913: Standard Test Method for
Particle-Size Distribution Test of Soil.
Commonly known as the gradation test, is a basic test for non-cohesive soils such as sand and aggregate to determine the percentage of different particle size.
A good thermal backfill is a non-porous, well-graded material passing ¼-inch (6.4mm) sieve size and with about 12-18% fines (material passing #200 sieve).
If you are looking for a suitable granular backfill that can be used around direct-buried cables or on top of duct-bank concrete, please click here for our suggested upper and lower limits for a backfill.
At Geotherm, we adhere to the ASTM D6913 - Standard Test Method for Particle-Size Distribution Test of Soil. Based on the PSD characteristics of different materials, we utilize our experience and expertise to formulate a ‘composite’ material that will yield superior thermal performance or result in cost savings.
