Energized cables generate a lot of heat that must be dissipated through the backfill and native soil. The ability of the surrounding soil to transfer the heat determines whether an operating cable remains cool or overheats.
In order to determine the thermal properties of soils and backfills, one must conduct field and laboratory measurements using an industry standard test instrument such as Geotherm TPA2000; originally developed and designed under the sponsorship of Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI EL-2128).

How to Ship This Samples
Bulk or granular backfill
Submit a minimum of 10-lbs for each compaction effort in a double- bagged heavy-duty Ziploc plastic bag. For material coarser than 1/2", please send a minimum of one-half bucket (5-gallon).
Identification of Samples
Identify the samples with Project Name, Sample ID, Location, Bore Hole, Depth, Date samples taken, etc. The samples should be representative of the soil from the cable burial depth and above. Include a copy of the borehole logs.
Proctor
Provide a Proctor (Standard or Modified) density, starting moisture content and percent compaction effort.
